A number of the team have been involved with important expeditions work to wrecks including The Lusitania, The Britannic, The Andrea Doria, HMS Affray and HMS M1. All of the team regularly dive the deeper wrecks of The English Channel, The US Atlantic Coast and Canada.

Geraint Ffoulkes Jones (UK) - Expedition Diving Officer, Director Nessia Limited
Closed circuit mixed gas diver

BSAC Advanced Instructor and IANTD Trimix, Cave and Rebreather Diver.
Geraint started diving in 1985, moving to Trimix in 1995 to further his deep wreck exploration interests as a member of the Starfish Enterprise team. Since October 99 he has been diving with the Inspiration CCR. Previous expeditions of note include the HMS Affray 98 (86m), Britannic 98 (120m), HMS M1 99 (75m), Lusitania 99 (93m) and Jutland 2000 (45-60m).

'As a long term friend of Greg's he first spoke to me about this wreck his grandparents died on in the early 90's and how he wanted to find and dive it. In these early days we realised it was beyond our reach both in terms of depth and logistics, and the subject only came up infrequently. When, on returning from the Britannic 98 expedition, he stated that he now realised it was possible, and that he was going to find the Struma, I instantly become the first signed up member of his team.'

Mark Brill (UK) - Director Nessia Limited
Closed circuit mixed gas diver and stills photographer

Qualifications: IANTD Trimix Diver, NACD Full Cave Diver and BSAC Instructor. Mark's main interest is in deep wreck exploration and can be found most weekends somewhere in the English Channel trying to satisfy this urge.

'This expedition is very important to me. Although there have been so many attrocities during and since WW2, its often the personal stories, like that of Greg's family, that bring home a real understanding of what it means to suffer from persecution and dispossetion. As someone who is Jewish I feel it is important to remind the world of what can happen when there is intollerence in society. There were three people by the name of Brill on the Struma and although they are not immediate relatives of mine, I feel an affinity as if they were part of my own family.'

Louise Trewavas (UK)
Closed circuit mixed gas diver

IANTD Trimix Diver, NACD Full Cave Diver and BSAC Instructor.
Most of Louise's spare time is spent diving around the UK and in particular exploring the English Channel's deep wrecks. She has dived all over the world from the cave's of Mexico's Yucatan to The Galapagos Islands.
Louise is also the publisher/editor of Dive Girl magazine and a columnist for Diver magazine.

'When I first heard the story of the Struma I was struck by the lack of compassion shown towards the people on board. These men, women and children were escaping genocide, they had been stripped of their possessions, even their wedding rings had been taken. They had to endure terrible conditions on board the ship, they were denied refuge, they were forcefully towed out to sea, abandoned, and deliberately sunk. It is a tale of persecution, where very little respect or humanity was shown to the Struma passengers. I see the project as a way of bringing some dignity back to the situation. Its an opportunity to bear witness to what happened and make sure it is not forgotten. It also provides a focus for the relatives and friends of those who were killed to remember and mark their passing with ceremony. I feel very priveleged to be part of the project. I can't think of anything that would give me a better reason to dive. The story of the Struma is a tragic one, but the Struma Project is a celebration of people reclaiming some humanity from the tragedy.'
